Offshore and onshore projects are often long-term ventures. From initial discovery of the potential energy source over feasibility studies to the FEED phase, a time frame of several years is most common.
Bridging the FEED and the actual construction phase is the detailed design. In the detailed design phase, finding the right balance between cost and quality is the engineering challenge.
The design is a cooperative effort between a number of disciplines. Each discipline is responsible for preparing a design to a given specification level and coordinating with the other disciplines. Changes to the requirements that were set out from the start of the project often occur and the detailed design will need to be changed accordingly.
