Weight estimating and monitoring

Weight and centre of gravity (CoG) are both important aspects of a design. Structural analyses and marine operations are strongly influenced by the weight of a given structure.

Ramboll provides the tools to handle these aspects and our estimates are relevant for early concept studies, engineering, construction, operation and modification projects.

In a project, variations in weight during and after the design phase are an unwanted factor. To prevent this variation from occuring, weight estimates need to be as accurate as possible in the early stages of a project.

Software used for accurate estimates

Ramboll Oil & Gas’ software system WEPS (Weight and cost Estimating and Project Screening) is the tool to make these accurate estimates that can ultimately assist our customers in the crucial decision-making process of a project.

Monitoring with MON

We have also developed the software system MON, MONitoring, for topsides projects. MON can be used monitoring and controlling weights, loads and centre of gravity (CoG) as well as quantities and costs of topsides for all offshore structures and vessels.

With MON our customers get an inexpensive insurance against stability problems, structural overloads as well as budget overrun and failure to meet deadlines.

Ramboll Oil & Gas keeps historical cost and weight databases which provide valuable detailed information for future offshore projects

Our in-house software WEPS

One of the cornerstones of our business is our in-house developed weight and cost estimating program WEPS (Weight and cost Estimation, Platform Screening). It is a high quality tool, which relies on an extensive database of contractual and as-built project information from the Norwegian and British sector of the North Sea. Based on information from oil and gas fields, our experts develop flow diagrams, concept layouts and master equipment lists. WEPS’ high precision ratio allows our clients to make well-founded concept decisions, increases efficiency in project execution, decreases project risks and ensures successful management planning.

Reliable weight estimates serve as a basis for determining:

  • Weight budget
  • Concept feasibility study
  • Project cost
  • Project schedule
  • Weight monitoring

Once the project is being developed weights must be reported at regular intervals to ensure correspondence between weight estimates – and budget- and weight take offs (WTO). This reporting ensures that any variations are identified and properly evaluated. Differences between weight budget and the weights reported by each discipline constitute the weight contingency.
