In the efforts to develop more sustainable energy in the future, wind power continues to be the preferred solution to extract energy, and offshore wind farms are constructed at impressive pace worldwide.

The size of offshore wind farms increases, and sites are located in deeper waters and farther away from shores. This generates additional challenges for the developers and owners in the planning of the design, layout, maintenance and operation philosophies for the wind farm and its substation.

Offshore experience around the world

As a leading offshore engineering consultant, we know the challenges connected to the design, construction, maintenance and operation of offshore wind farms.

Our vast experience within jackets/substructure and multidiscipline topside design has been founded through projects for offshore facilities for over 30 years. Our specialised engineers work with development and design of offshore substation projects on international projects.

Substation design competences

We cover a broad range of engineering disciplines for offshore substation design. Some of our competences include:

  • Definition of design standards/codes and development of Safety Philosophies
  • General layout development with consideration to safety, mechanical handling, commissioning, operation and maintenance
  • Implementation of electrical equipment such as transformers, reactors, GIS switchgear, LV-switchgear, UPS system and SCADA/control systems
  • Specification of all auxiliary equipment such as cranes, emergency diesel systems, workshops and fire fighting systems
  • Accommodation facilities and helicopter-decks
  • Jacket/substructure design including j-tubes for cables, boat landings and foundation/piles, scour protection
  • Installation engineering for topside and substructure/jacket

Two substation options were designed and evaluated for the Anholt offshore wind farm but the steel jacket solution was rejected for this project.
