LNG is shipped in purpose made LNG carriers from gas rich countries such as Algeria, Indonesia, Norway, Trinidad & Tobago and Qatar. In some cases the gas is exported to far destinations and cargos entering the European market come from destinations as far as Australia.
Upon arrival, the LNG is pumped to storage tanks for temporary storage, re-gasified and distributed to the gas transmission systems.
Facts on LNG
LNG typically contains more than 90% methane (CH4). It also contains small amounts of ethane, propane, butane and some heavier alkanes. It is predominantly methane that is converted temporarily to liquid form.
Depending on temperature, pressure and composition, the density of LNG is typically in the range 0.41 to 0.5 kg/l compared to water with a density of approximately 1.0 kg/l.
