Working on the Nord Stream pipeline across Ramboll offices

Marin Haugas, 28, is an engineer in Environmental Technology. Marin is from Estonia but has moved to Denmark to work at Ramboll’s office in Copenhagen. Here she works on the Nord Stream Pipeline project - an impressive 1220 km dual pipeline system from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea.

Marin Haugas started her career as environmental specialist and Geographical Information System (GIS) expert at Ramboll Estonia back in 2008.

From her studies in Environmental Technology in Estonia, she had gained significant experience in data management and the GIS programme MapInfo. Based on this, Marin Haugas was hired to work on the Nord Stream Pipeline project.

A passion for GIS

“I started working on the Nord Stream project in Estonia, where I did some proof-reading of the Espoo report in Estonian. In the beginning of 2009 I went to Ramboll´s office in Copenhagen to attend some meetings with colleagues from nine different countries who were involved in the project. Soon after a maternity leave position in Denmark opened, and I was transferred to work full-time as GIS specialist and producer of maps on the Nord Stream project,” says Marin.

Professional and personal gains in international environment

Now Marin has a permanent position in Ramboll Copenhagen, and even though she’s far away from her friends and family in Estonia, she is happy with her life in Denmark.

“I really like it here in Denmark. It’s such a learning and exciting experience to live in another country. And my colleagues are very helpful and nice – plus it’s nice to work in an international team. I’ve started to learn Danish and even though we normally speak English at work, it’s good to know some Danish words and phrases. My favourite word is Halløjsa which is a good and funny way to greet each other – and I think my colleagues like that I try out some Danish words from time to time,” she says.
