Meet Thomas Uhre Pedersen and Hans Peter Koch Hertel, two students from Aalborg University who are doing internships at Ramboll Oil & Gas, Esbjerg.

Hans Peter Koch Hertel, 24, is studying civil engineering (building and design), and Thomas Uhre Pedersen, 30, is enrolled at the chartered surveying education, both on the 9th semester at Aalborg University. They are employed as interns at Ramboll Oil & Gas in Esbjerg from August-December 2009. After the internship they go back to university to write their theses.

Why do an internship in the first place?

Hans Peter: “I chose to apply for an internship at Ramboll Oil & Gas to get the opportunity to go more into depth with projects and analyses as well as to grab the challenge to develop my engineering skills in a new and complex industry.”

Thomas: “My main drive for an internship with a large engineering consultancy company like Ramboll was the opportunity to get an industrial and practical angle on my education. Engineering companies have a reputation of executing projects from start to end and I find this very motivating.”

How did you get the internship at Ramboll Oil & Gas?

Hans Peter: I participated in a company visit at Ramboll’s office in Aalborg. Here I heard about the position in Ramboll Oil & Gas.

Thomas: One of my professors at the university had a contact in Ramboll Oil & Gas and that was actually my way to the internship.

What tasks and projects do you do in the internship?

Hans Peter: “I work in the structure department, so my main tasks so far have been to analyse sub-sea structures for platforms. I have been involved in several projects that have been both challenging and complex, and it has given me knowledge about a new side of engineering to me.”

Thomas: “I have many different assignments, both small and bigger projects. I think the division of both exciting and more basic tasks gives a good picture of the real-life situation in an engineering company. The results contribute to add value to the company, and I feel that both parties gain from the internship. Point clouds can hardly be spared in offshore as-built projects today as they provide precise measurements that can be converted to 3D models and used in planning and re-analyses.”

What about the internship project?

Hans Peter: We have the time to work on our internship project during working hours. We control the progress of the project ourselves when it fits into the daily tasks. Also, the internship project concerns a project or theme in Ramboll Oil & Gas, so the results can be used in the future in the company.

Thomas: We regularly keep in touch with our internship supervisors at the university including mid-term evaluations. We can contact them at any time regarding the internship.

Future job opportunities?

Hans Peter: The oil and gas industry is quite fascinating and I could easily picture myself working with this in the future. The projects are complex and demands precision, high-tech solutions and specialised employees. I think the job opportunities are exciting and challenging. Actually, I plan on pursuing a career within offshore engineering.

Thomas: With my profile in chartered surveying I can see myself in many job positions. Because of the size and multiple disciplines, Ramboll is capable of participating in grand and prestigious projects such as bridges, tunnels, railway renewals and motorways. And that I would like to be part of.”
